I was just chatting with another mum about how nice it would be to be able to buy an ice cream in the summer or a cup of tea, slice of cake or a cup of hot soup or Bovril maybe in inclement weather at the recreation ground. Obviously there are the lovely Hospice of Hope and Willow Tea rooms cafes in the village and I wouldn't want to see those put out of business, but I think a small booth, with a limited range, could serve people using the rec who may have different requirements to those who want a light meal and a sit down at one of the established cafes.

I wonder has anyone ever put such a proposal to the landowners (Sevenoaks Council?) or to the Parish Council before? I know an ice cream van comes once a week to the car park in the summer months, but do people have any thoughts on there being a more permament fixture?

If it were me running it (pipedream) I would serve ice cream in twist cones - some nice brand like Minghella's or Kelly's, home made cakes and buns, Twinings teas, Illy coffee, and soup and beef tea in colder weather. I've just made myself hungry writing that.

Sevenoaks District Seniors Action Forum (SDSAF) will hold its launch and first AGM on Friday 1 October, in the Plaza room of the Stag in Sevenoaks, from 3.30-5pm.

The Forum will represent the concerns of those aged 50+ with the providers of services and facilities they care about, and campaign for improvements. Exploratory meetings this spring in Swanley, Edenbridge and Sevenoaks identified a lot of interest, and an initial list of issues (quite a few!) about which older people are concerned, such as transport, health, shops, local facilities, the environment.

Anyone aged 50 or above anywhere in our District – from Edenbridge to Hartley, Hextable to Leigh and all towns and villages between – is welcome to join (no cost). An interim committee of volunteers has been doing preparatory work, but anyone can put herself or himself forward to serve on the substantive committee to be appointed at the AGM.

No need to book, just come along on 1 October It is International Day of the Older Person, and Age UK Sevenoaks will be running a programme in the Plaza room throughout the day, so you could catch some of that too. Refreshments available. Parking adjacent and nearby (all pay+display).

Have mobility problems and need help with transport? Contact Merilyn in Sevenoaks 01732 461397 or Peter in Swanley 01322 663076.
General enquiries to Roger Bryan, interim chairman, on 01322 664754 or 07913 744561 mobile.

The Forum is supported by Age UK Sevenoaks, Voluntary Action Within Kent, West Kent Housing, and Sevenoaks District Council ; with funding support from Kent County Council.

August here already and the Summer seems to have deserted us! I feel very sorry for all those festival-goers who have had to endure the vagaries of the British weather - including me! But Cropredy was worth braving the rain for some very fine music indeeed! Some of which I'm hoping will find its way to our little corner of the world in the future....

But let's look forward to September, here's a quick run-down of everything happening during the month:-

JOHN OTWAY & WILD WILLY BARRETT
Otway & Barrett outings are so rare - and this is the last one for the foreseeable future - that you really can't afford to miss out. The duo are so versatile and comfortable on stage, one minute playing the fool, the next playing a wonderful sensitive ballad, moving from one extreme to the other with effortless ease and playing some superb songs along the way. I can honestly say that, in my opinion, this is one of the best live club acts you'll ever see. If you've not experienced an Otway & Barrett gig before, please do take my recommendation, you won't be disappointed! A seated event.
JOHN OTWAY & WILD WILLY BARRETT THE ROCK PLAZA, SEVENOAKS SATURDAY 4 SEPTEMBER TICKETS £14.00

SAM CARTER
One of a number of impressive new, young singer-songwriters bursting on to the scene, Sam Carter's guitar playing and songwriting belie his years. Often likened to a young John Martyn (what better accolade could he have than that!) his complex guitar work aids rather than hinders the skill and ingenuity of his songs. "It hardly seems fair that someone so young and with so much time to improve is already so damn good." - The Irish World. To see an upcoming artist like this in a small intimate setting will be a treat indeed. A seated event.
SAM CARTER THE CROWN, OTFORD FRIDAY 10 SEPTEMBER TICKETS £9.00

RICHARD DIGANCE
Who else could get 20,000 people morris dancing to a morris version of Bohemian Rhapsody? Or providing the nautical sound effects to his own version of Local Hero? Richard Digance has that rare ability to make you laugh out loud at one minute and cry the next. His songs range from the outright comic to the most poignant, with a wry look at society in between, and he has turned nostalgia into an art form. Always delivered with panache and style, in his own unique manner, a Richard Digance gig is a night not to be missed! A seated event.
RICHARD DIGANCE THE STAG THEATRE, SEVENOAKS FRIDAY 17 SEPTEMBER TICKETS £15.00

THINK FLOYD
There's little to be said that hasn't already been done so about this band. Widely regarded as the UK's number one tribute to Pink Floyd, their musical pedigree is excellent, their repertoire encompasses the whole range of classic Pink Floyd from the Barrett years, through Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, to The Division Bell, all backed up by an impressive light show as with the original band. In the Victorian splendour of the Great Hall this will be superb, if you're a Floyd fan, you've got to be here. A seated event.
THINK FLOYD BLACKHEATH HALLS, BLACKHEATH SATURDAY 18 SEPTEMBER TICKETS £16.00

THE ELEVATORS
The Elevators are the leading UK exponents of the classic Electric blues tradition with references to Robert Johnson, BB King, Peter Green, Clapton, and modernists like Robert Cray, but they are not afraid to venture in to Blues territory covered by the like of Ry Cooder and Dylan. Supremely professional with classic and impeccable equipment, light show and stage presentation, The Elevators have justly earned their reputation for being one of the most exciting Blues Bands playing in England today. A seated event.
THE ELEVATORS THE ROCK PLAZA, SEVENOAKS FRIDAY 24 SEPTEMBER TICKETS £10.00

ROBIN TROWER
Robin Trower is one of the most influential Guitar players to come out of the British Blues Rock scene. Despite being tagged by the press with the nickname of "The White Hendrix" back in the 70's, he has created his own way of expressing himself through the guitar, the result of which is a unique style of music all his own. Used to playing arenas around the world, this gig at the SoundHouse will provide an exclusive opportunity to see him live, ‘up close and personal’, in a fantastic, intimate club setting. Not one to be missed! A standing event.
ROBIN TROWER THE SOUNDHOUSE, OTFORD SATURDAY 25 SEPTEMBER TICKETS £17.00

CURST SONS
September's Flying Burrito Club presentation, The Curst Sons unique take on American traditional music mixes Blues, Gospel and Old Time with a kick-ass stomp and a dose of wry humour. Since their first gig in a friend's kitchen back in 1998 the Sons have released four CDs on their own Curst Mountain label, played far too many pubs, clubs and festivals for their addled old brains to remember, and recorded two live sessions for Mark Lamarr on BBC Radio 2. They are also a powerful live act: “...more and more of the audience crept from their seats and like Deep South Baptists possessed of the Spirit danced a fine ol' jig.” A seated, cabaret style event.
THE CURST SONS THE FLYING BURRITO CLUB, SEVENOAKS THURSDAY 30 SEPTEMBER TICKETS £9.00

So, a great start to the Autumn/Winter music season, plenty there to get your teeth into! And to whet your appetite further, attached is a full list of all events between now and Christmas. You'll notice a few new additions, PAUL COX & CHARLIE FABERT at the Crown in Otford, JACKIE LEVEN back for a return visit, this time at The Beacon, Tunbridge Wells, and THE HAMSTERS PLAY HENDRIX, marking the 40th anniversary of Jimi's death, at Sidcup Sports Club.

Tickets for all events above and on the attached list are now available. E-mail me at discounts@brandywinemusic.co.uk or telephone 07798 767770 to make your reservations. Payment can be made by sending a cheque, made out to BRANDYWINE MUSIC, and addressed to Brandywine Music, P.O. Box 474, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 9JR. I look forward to hearing from you.

"The only good thing about the Spice Girls is that you can look at them with the sound turned down" ~ George Harrison

Last, but most definitely not least, to all those Gig Listers who got in touch and with whom I shared great beer beer and great conversation at the Cropredy bar - you know who you are - a big thank you!! I hope to see you and many others at the forthcoming gigs.

Live long and prosper,
